As part of our responsibility to our communities, Inco is committed to environmental stewardship. Our goal is to deal with environmental issues in a transparent manner, continuously improve air quality and serve as stewards of the land and water we use.
Certainly, protecting the environment continues to be a priority for PT Inco.
During the last two years, we introduced an electrostatic precipitator on one of our three dryers as well as a new design of cyclonic separator into the first of our three kilns. This resulted in significant environmental improvements. Overall, dust emissions for the PT Inco plant at Sorowako have improved by 79 per cent in 2002 compared with 1992.
During the same period, we have:
- initiated a program to analyze furnace off-gas emissions in order to design and install new technology that will reduce dust.
- revegetated about 700 hectares in former mining locations.
- continued to monitor runoff from our mines and process plants. Solids contained in liquid waste streams remain far below regulatory limits.
Although these results are promising, Jim Gowans, Senior Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer at PT Inco, sees more work to be done. “We want to raise the level of commitment toward environmental compliance,” he says. “Our goal is continuous improvement.”
