Inco's Thompson Operation is located 700 kilometres north of Winnipeg, Manitoba. While the Thompson community is isolated with a small population base, it is well-served by a regional hospital that provides a wide-range of health care services including a mammography unit partially-funded by Inco, and other medical services such as audiometric and CAT scans. In addition to services available at the hospital, Inco undertook to strengthen the services aimed at occupational medicine.

The occupational medicine team developed a program that would meet the needs of Inco employees and their families living in Thompson. A key component was to establish a health centre in the community – one that would provide such services as physiotherapy and rehabilitation, as well as kinesiology and fitness assessments. The only health facility of its kind north of Winnipeg, its first priority is to treat Inco employees and their families.
